Flesh
18/12/2011, Methley Methodist Church, morning worship (Advent 4)
Preacher: Rev Jenny Gill
Scriptures: John 1:11 (the call to worship), Luke: 1:26-38,. Luke 2:1-7, 8-20, Matthew 2:1-12, John 1:1-14
The image began with a song. Emma Dobson, a member of the Church sang a beautiful solo of ‘O Holy Night’ accompanied by her father, Kevin on the guitar. In my minds eye I saw the birth of Christ as a song, a God Song filled with the melodies of heaven resonating through creation to the creator. The sermon contained an illustration the Cern Hadron Collider particle accelerator and the scientific experiments to prove the existence of the ‘Higgs-Boson’ particle, believed to be the key to how other atomic particles are formed and has been nicknamed ‘The God Particle’. The illustration tied into John 1: 3-5, and so the idea of God the creator as a spark of creation – Light from light, True God from True God! The star becomes God the creator whose light shines upon the earth, guiding Shepherd and wise men to the Christ Child.
